Frequently Asked Questions
Does NC require a bill of sale? No. However, having a notarized bill of sale will provide proof of transfer of title and help a seller recoup car taxes already paid for the current year. (States that do require a bill of sale: Maryland, West Virginia, Nebraska, Louisiana, Montana, New Hampshire)
What if the seller signed the title before seeing the notary? The seller will need to present before a notary and acknowledge that they signed it previously.
Does the buyer need to present with the seller in front of the notary? No. The buyer does not have to be present. However, the buyer's full legal name and address must be printed on the car title for it to be notarized.
What if I marked or wrote the information incorrectly on the car title? Do not cross anything out. It is best to visit the DMV directly or call their hotline number 919-715-7000 for advice.
